An updated version of the MIDI Drum Kit module (now build #25) has been released that features Solo as well as Mute buttons...

Thanks Colin, that has made this a VERY useful module now.

Just trying to understand your thought processes, but why did you choose to highlight solo and mute with blue?
I ask this, in that every instance elsewhere solo is usually yellow-ish and mute red. Does NOT affect the operation but visually?

Also while I am being cheeky, what is your reasoning in allowing both solo AND mute to be active at the same time?
I would have thought that select ONE solo and the rest get muted. Select 2nd solo and that turns OFF that mute.

Cheers Peter

Hi Peter,

My thinking on button colors is simply about aesthetic consistency - so all latching buttons in LSSP are colored blue with the exception of record functions that are colored red. There aren't a great deal of options with the default buttons in VMD and so far the time investment in creating custom buttons hasn't been justifiable.

Mixer technology is a whole field in itself. It can get very complex on a pro-level desk with groups, foldback and FX sub-mixes, PFL, AFL etc. And there are different requirements for live, mixdown and performance scenarios.

When using only six channels like with MIDI Drum Kit then Mute and Solo operation isn't really such a big deal which is why the initial design only offered mutes (with the concession of Cancel all Mutes for performance control).

There's no agreed standard on Mute Solo behaviour. Indeed If you compare CA's 6 channel stereo mixer with their Console Mixer I think that the former gives precedence to Solo but the latter to Mute. Although in my experience of physical desks Solo almost always overrides Mute.

One might expect a Solo button to cancel the Mute button on the same channel but this would mean that the mix might not return to it's previous state when a Solo button was disengaged.

Also the name Solo is a bit of a misnomer. If pressing one Solo button cancelled all the other Solo buttons it would make many operations very difficult to perform. For instance on an average 16 channel mix one might have say three stereo feeds and so to listen to one of these instruments in isolation one needs to Solo two channels at once. Or say one wants to focus on the interaction between a kick drum and a bass guitar part - again one needs multiple Solo buttons active at the same time. Otherwise one might need to press 14 mute buttons to achieve the same end.
