FR: More categories for the modules

At the moment, the current categories of modules is: Source, Processor, Controller, Utility and Effect.

This categorisation seems too generic to me and can give some very large lists. That makes the categories less useful. And, currently, some of the classifications look odd: some EQs and Phasers are under "Controllers", others are under "Effects". Some ASDRs are "Sources".

I would like to suggest the use of more, specialised, categories. These would enable to users to find the type of modules that they want more quickly. My initial suggestions for a bigger list of categories is:
  • Audio Sources
  • Audio Effects
  • Audio Filters -- separated out as there are quite a few of them
  • Sequencers
  • MIDI Handlers
  • Controllers -- LFOs and envelope generators
  • Signal Routers -- switches, mixers, splitters, mono<-->poly etc
  • Control Signal Processors -- converters, VCA, min/max etc
  • Timing -- clocks, syncs etc
  • Tools -- triggers, notepad, plug-in hosts, maths, mutes etc
  • Visualizers -- meters, displays, counters, oscilloscope
What do you think? Can you improve on the categories?

Rather than rely on Cherry Audio to organize modules, I would like to see a User tab added to the library allowing users to create categories and organize modules as they see fix. Also add the user tab to the menu so the user module organization may be accessed without have to keep the library open.

I agree with both Darkstar and Scook.
If the things were open to user assignment of categories (I haven't delved into it myself), it would be a lot easier to find patches you create without having to wade through hundreds in the user folder.
Also, if they were categorised more in the way Darkstar suggests it would make it easier to demonstrate to users how to use the thing more productively through a few videos explaining how modules within each category fit into a sequence of modules in use i.e. clocks precede sequencers, which precede oscillators etc etc, because it will take years just to get a feel for what some of the modules are actually doing. I mean I try every day to get my head around why rachetters will trigger, but only periodically, when they are receiving a constant clock rate. It makes no sense to me. I have only just noticed the sync dividers in the last few days when Captain explained how I could get a swing effect. Whilst I still don't understand HOW it works, I now have a setup that gives me the variation of multi-layered sequencing that I want using a one to eight switch and a delay.
I have been using this stuff for over 6 months, but it's taken to today to get that far with it.
Also if anyone could explain how to trigger sequences in sequence so that one starts when another ends, I would be very grateful as it would probably save me another month of my life. Thanks

For patch saving, I've just found out that you can type in the name of a new category and that will create a new folder on disk with the new patch in it.

Click the category name and you should see a black rectangular outline, then remove the current name and type in the new category name that you want.

I haven't thought about this enough to weigh in with a solution as of yet, but I just wanted to add a little perspective by saying...What a wonderful problem to have! People with Eurorack or other hardware systems WISH they had this problem. Enjoy the sins of excess that Voltage Modular provides you. And don't worry, with time, it will only get worse.

Voltage is only a year old and it's still very early days. Yet look how rapidly it has grown and improved. Cherry, along with all your help and suggestions, will hone this platform to perfection. I'm enjoying the ride very much.

Yep, we need our own metatags to create our own categories.

 class :)
Yes, I looked at it last night and discovered that creating folders within the folders means they don't get recognised. It currently only sees primary folder level. I created one for each month, but as I have saved over 150 presets so far this month to keep track of what I come up with, it is still rather apparent that in a couple of years the number of folders would have again become daunting. Kindly make the browser capable of seeing sub-folders. Thanks. :)

One more vote for subfolder. A Favourites folder is a good start, but my Favourites folder is full of all kinds of modules, and growing. A Favourite LFOs folder, a Favourite OSCs folder, etc. This is what we need.

Hey everyone, we already *CAN* have user created categories... right click on a module in the Library view, and select "Tag Editor". Once in that window you can change the module's category, or create a new one to put it in.

It was tedious moving everything around, but this is my current organization:
