Feature Request: Ribbon Control/Mapping Options

Post by Jean d'Oran »

Good evening, everybody !
I'm putting my post here, because that's where it seems most appropriate:

I had a dream: I was controlling a Voltage Modular patch with a graphics tablet:
  • the pitch on the X axis,
  • the filter opening on the y axis
  • and the depth of an LFO's effect with pressure.
Do you think it would be easy to declare a graphics tablet as a CV controller? It's actually an inverted mouse, but I don't know how to declare a mouse, or even a joystick, as a controller.

I think it was the Space Controller from @ChR_is who sparked the idea, since its module is an inverted mouse!

Thanks in advance !

Years ago I used third-party software with a Wacom Tablet from the Windows 98 SE / Windows XP era. The software allowed users to load an image (photograph, drawing, etc.) in the virtual tablet. The color/hue/luminance underneath the pencil/stylus could be mapped to all sorts of parameters using MIDI. I don't see why someone couldn't do something like that with a VM module that outputs to CV.

Thanks for your answer, Steve !
Incidentally, do you remember how you taught the tablet to speak in midi language ?

I didn't teach it to speak midi. The software developer did that. I went on line the other night to see if it was still available, but couldn't find it. If it was still available I would have posted a link.

The program I used with the wacom tablet was called wmidi and it was created by Nicolas Fournel. I cannot find his site any more. When I searched, the web took me to a site for Viagra. He used to have a very informative site.

A windows application wmidi 1.3 can be found at https://download.cnet.com/wmidi/3001-21 ... 82667.html. I scanned it with MalwareBytes which didn't report any malware, but it doesn't run on Windows 10.

The manual should give you a good idea how it worked. The screenshot at the beginning shows how we could assign parameters to CCs. It was lots of fun!!!

There was tablet2midi, which was perfect for this, as the name implies:

However, the demo download link no longer works. You can still get it via the waybackmachine site with a bit of digging around. The demo version is functioning but with some limitations.

Alternatively, the modular app Plogue Bidule has a 'HID data extractor' module which includes a 'Wacom Virtual Hid driver':

Nichola Fournel still has a site here:

There is a link to download wmidi but as Steve W said, it doesn't work with win10.

Thanks for the link for some reason, Google gives me the correct link, but takes me to a page that pretends to sell viagra and other drugs. But when I copy the link address, I get the legitimate page at his site for WMIDI. http://www.nicolasfournel.com/?page_id=73

This is totally beyond me abilities, but I did look up Wacom Tablet API and found this overview page as part of the documentation: https://developer-docs.wacom.com/docs/s ... api-guide/ . Not sure if the tablet parameters can be pulled using the API and be used by a VM Module, but I thought I'd pass this along in case any one is interested in looking (more than just using the X, Y coordinates).

If it's an inverted mouse, there might be ways to map its axes to control different parameters.
