MIDI CC Assignments

It's easy to assign an incoming MIDI CC# to a parameter, using MIDI Learn. But if I don't have a MIDI controller keyboard, or if I just want to assign the MIDI CC# manually, how do I do it? And a related question - can I edit the assigned CCs in the MIDI browser? (I don't think so)

Do you have a DAW?

The scenario is an existing track in Logic that contains CC#7 data. I want to use an instance of VM and have it read that CC data. I can use Learn, and listen for incoming CC#7 data either from the track itself, or from a MIDI controller, but I'd rather do the obvious thing and just set the parameter manually to read CC#7 (e.g. right click).

Thanks for the explanation. I am aware of the need for creating workarounds in VM when trying to use MIDI. I have found it frustrating at times. Since I hadn't faced the issue you described, last night I tried it and found that as a plug-in (not in standalone mode), VM gives us the option to assign CCs as Automation in addition to Learn. Unfortunately that doesn't work the same ways as Learn. I tried other things too but they didn't work as I had hoped. I have not found a way to edit the CC assignments from the Library's MIDI table.

Yeah the MIDI section of the Library doesn't allow editing CC values, just Min/Max and Curve (not a bad thing mind you).

I don't think the Automation Assign values relate to CC#s. I believe they're an arbitrary set of slots that are visible to the DAW and thus automatable.
