Attaching a remote debugger

Is there any way to attach a remote debugger to the Module Designer ?
I can see in the logs that the built in debugger connects on port 9009, but from Intellij I can't connect or find an existing process to attach to.
It's very hard to debug deep calls and data structures using the built in debugging tools, so I'd really like to use the Intellij debugger if possible.
