Sequential switch

Post by JackOats »

Hi All,

Is there a clever way to 'Daisychain' several of the Cherry Audio 1X8 Switches together, does anybody know please?

I really hope it's possible. :!:

Many thanks.

Hey JackOats,

you can "Daisychain" up to 8 1x8 switches using another 1x8 switch and a clock divider, given you trigger the steps through the step trigger input like so:

Hi honki-bobo,

Thanks very much for the screenshot - very interesting. I'm having a little trouble identifying some of the cables though.

Would you mind resending the SS with the cables a bit more visible please.

That would be so helpful - thank you.

Hi JackOats,

I have un-cluttered the patch, colored the cables and added labels so it should be more visible now what is going on.
The basic idea is that you use a master 1x8 switch that distributes your signal to the slave switches A through D. The clock for the master must be divided by 8, so your signal (which is fed into the master's input) can be distributed to each slave switch in turn.
If you have any questions, please let me know.

Best regards,
Martin

Ahh. Fantastic! Thank you very much. That's very clear & helps me understand what's going on.

I'll set it up tomorrow. Terrific - thank you for doing that. :D

Hi Martin,

Could I ask, please, when you say:
your signal (which is fed into the master's input)
which signal is that?

Sorry to be so dumb. :oops: :oops: :oops:

Hi JackOats,

by "your signal", I mean the signal you want to send to the outputs of the 1x8 switches, e.g. the signal you wanted to use the "daisychain" for in the first place.

Hi Martin,
Well, this is where I am, so far.
It's a shortened version of your setup, with 2 Sequencers.
I expected the 1st 4 beat phrase to play twice, followed by 2 silent 'phrases', then a switch over to the 2nd Sequencer & ditto.
But both phrases are repeatedly playing at the same time.
I've tried lots of different wiring combinations but can't figure out where I'm going wrong. :? :( :oops:

Ok, I've tried to replicate what I think you are trying to accomplish. Here's what I came up with:
2x4 beats phrase then 2x4 beats silence.jpg
2x4 beats phrase then 2x4 beats silence.jpg (536.15 KiB) Viewed 4481 times
What I have basically done is I've routed the Start signal from TempoClock to the start and stop inputs of the sequencers like so:

TempoClock.START -> 1x8Switch.IN + 1x8Switch.RESET + ClockDivider.RESET1
1x8Switch.1 -> Seq1.START + Seq2.STOP
1x8Switch.2 -> Seq1.STOP + Seq2.STOP
1x8Switch.3 -> Seq1.STOP + Seq2.START
1x8Switch.4 -> Seq1.STOP + Seq2.STOP

Also:
TempoClock.STOP -> Seq1.STOP + Seq2.STOP
TempoClock.CLK -> ClockDivider.IN1
ClockDivider.OUT1 -> 1x8Switch.STEPTRIGGER

On my first attempt I also had TempoClock.CLK connected to the external clock inputs of the sequencers, which seemed like a logical thing to do. But then I could alwas hear the first note of each sequencer at the end of the 2x4-beat-cycle, which was anoying :evil:
I found that the cause of this was a 1 sample delay caused by the 1x8Switch (which every module in a signal chain introduces). That is why I've inserted a Gain Module and connected ClockDivider.OUT2 to Gain.INPUT and Gain.OUTPUT to Seq1.EXTCLK and Seq2.EXTCLK and voila, everything worked out fine. For all this to work you will have to set ClockDivider.DIVIDEBY1 to 8, ClockDivider.DIVIDEBY2 to 1 and enable ClockDivider.INPUTLINK.

Hi Martin - Wow! Thanks very much for working on that. Very good of you.

I'll need to spend some quiet time tomorrow to see if I can follow what you have done. :shock: :)
