Where to save things

Okay, a totally newb question, but while I have a lot of coding chops, musically I'm basically a hardware guy, so be kind 
. Is there a preferred location or set of locations for installing all the executables, DLLs, and VST files the various VM apps and synths install? I've ended up with something of a mess based on a pre-existing directory (created, I think, by Adobe Audition, which I used back when I did game sounds). And that said, is there a preferred way of rearranging it all, short of killing everything and reinstalling? Thanks.
