control surfaces for VM?

What do people do about hardware and VM? (knobs and buttons rather than keys really as I've got a fair few keyboards)

I was thinking of a novation control but the knobs look quite close together. I bought an akai midimax some time ago but sent it back for that reason and that the knobs were quite stiff. I actually just bought an Arturia minilab just for VM thinking that the encoders would be better but I'm not so struck as the encoders don't seem too accurate.

I'm thinking that I may like to play VM in realtime primarily from loys of knob turning and being quite phisically active so it sure would help to know what kit others use for this.
