Two suggestions:
When the mouse hovers over a jack with one or more cables connected, pop-up a tool-tip describing the other ends.
When the mouse hovers over a cable, pop-up a tool-tip describing both ends.
OF course, both behaviours would be controlled by the Tool-tip Delay.

Black text on a grey background is not easy to read here (I keep the brightness of my monitors turned down (to avoid being dazzled by MS Word et al).
